It also helps to block any splashes from the batch you are mixing. The guard has an ingredient pour spout to make it easy to add ingredients as you mix. Its a workhorse of a mixer, and it can take a beating. However, the slowest mixing setting is way too fast, and the fastest setting isn't fast enough. Not quite enough speed control.
